Abstract:

Two new methods for manufacturing surgical meshes modified by chitosan have been developed in the Institute of Biopolymers and Chemical Fibres (IBWCh) in collaboration with TRICOMED S.A. The first method consists in applying chitosan yarns and a non-resorbable polypropylene monofilament as raw materials for a knitted fabric with varying chitosan content. While elaborating the second method, a half-product in the form of an OPTOMESHTM Macropore surgical mesh was used. Serving as a base, the mesh was covered by a chitosan finish which formed a coating. The meshes thus modified were sterilised by ethylene oxide, and next tested in order to determine the physico-mechanical parameters, as well as to estimate the chemical and biological purity. Meshes covered by chitosan on only one side were selected for further research, as this kind of mesh promised better commercial application possibilities.
